Melcrum - Connecting Communicators
Melcrums Source for Communicators - A Free Weekly E-Zine for Corporate Communicators Email Editor Mandy Thatcher
October 24th, 2007 TNT's advice on global engagement

At Melcrum's Employee Engagement conference in Amsterdam next month, Job van Harmelen, senior communications consultant at TNT will share the online initiatives introduced to help connect and engage 150,000 employees with the company's future plans and goals. The list includes a virtual CEO office, blogs, online-chat sessions, podcasts and videocasts.

In an interview from the latest Melcrum podcast, van Harmelen shares his three tips for communicating with a large and globally dispersed workforce.

1. Get your themes right
If you're talking about strategy, get your strategic priorities straight and make sure that they mean something to the people you want to talk to. This can be very broad because strategic initiatives have an impact on almost everyone.

2. Be pragmatic
When we started [with our online initiatives] we thought we'd have the entire world online within a year, but you have to be satisfied with, for example, if you post a blog and get 10 replies. That means you've done a great job.

3. Stick to what you're doing
It's always easy to go with the next big thing. But make sure that once you have these [new] channels in place that they're continually being used. We know, for example, now that we've rolled out the videocasting part of the website, that it's not competing with the blog. They should empower each other to facilitate a dialogue. It's not about the tools, it's about the dialogue.
