Melcrum - Connecting Communicators

July 11th, 2007 Supporting managers at Siemens

The fact that our managers' toolkit guide continues to be our most popular publication confirms just how important leader and manager communication has become. So I thought I'd share a gem from the guide itself: a mini case study on how Siemens helps managers think through and choose the most appropriate communication approach.

Siemens’ intranet contains a site designed to help managers understand the pros and cons of the various internal communication channels.

On the "Choose Your Channel" web page, tips are given for how and when to use the channel and who to contact for more information. When managers click on a channel name or photograph, they link to a bulleted list that describes that channel’s attributes.

On the side of the screen are links to communication resources and a checklist of issues to consider before starting communication projects, such as:

Measurable communication goals: What does your project need to accomplish? What do you want people to do when they read your materials or attend your event? Examples: Attendance goal of 350 employees; achieve a response rate of 50%; gather 150 sales leads.

Target audience(s): Who needs to receive your message? All employees, managers only, employees in just one location, field personnel, customers, vendors? Is there more than one audience?

If you’re interested in this resource, download the full "Communication checklist for internal projects”.

See you next week.
