Melcrum - Connecting Communicators

October 5th, 2007 Match words and actions to see business results

"I'm tired of sharing the same messages and stories over and over again," a senior executive recently complained.

Progress!

In a culture of multiple messages, information overload and often shifting priorities, her complaint meant she was getting somewhere.

How do employees know what's important and what they should pay attention to? They hear it from the CEO and their supervisor. They read it in the newspaper. They see it on the intranet or in a blog. Most importantly, they notice that actions inside the company mirror the words.

Moving people to action
Building trust and credibility and moving people to action is about consistency of message across all touchpoints that's backed up operationally. Words and actions are aligned.

If communication is a key role for supervisors, for example, they've been told it's their responsibility (words) and are held accountable and measured regularly on how well they communicate (actions). This is one of the reasons why many supervisors aren't great communicators – they aren't held accountable and have never been trained. Both need to go hand-in-hand for trust to be built.

How well do your words match your actions? It's incredibly hard work, but nothing generates the buy-in you want faster. And that means the results you want too.

See you next week.
