Melcrum - Connecting Communicators

December 19th, 2007 The communicator's role in change

Welcome to the first issue of Melcrum's monthly newsletter on change communication (as a subscriber to The Source for Communicators you've been sent this first issue as a taster, but you can subscribe now for the next issue).

Over the coming months I'll be sharing some tips, tricks and thoughts about change communication. I'll focus on lessons learned both personally and from other communicators around the globe as together we share the great journey of change.

I was recently reminded that change and the emotions involved are the same as with the grieving process. A personal tragedy really brought home the fact that indeed it is the initial shock and emotions like anger, resistance, blocking and denial that affect us during change.

It's not until we can accept the change that we can fully move on and look towards the future, as we grieve we have to allow some time to accept.

The role of the communicator
As communicators, what's our role in this phase of change? A good ear helps, the skill of being able to listen is key. Ever had that friend who rings just to debrief? You know they're not looking for answers right now, they just need to talk. It's about offloading, having a whinge or simply having someone to listen to them. A "sympathetic ear" is just what the doctor ordered. It's important that as communicators, we provide the channels for feedback, discussion and listening – and what we hear will in fact help us down the track.

I recently posted a message on Melcrum's Communicators' Network asking people to share their top tips for change communication. Below is some of the great advice people offered:

"Identify 'change leaders' across the organization that have the skills to represent formal communications within the local culture and at human level."
David Paul – Berkshire, UK

"Focus on making sure that the change is visible in the daily activities of everyone in the organization, especially leaders."
John Onoda – California, US

"Concentrate on communicating the facts, fast and frequently."
Nicholas Ranken – Paris, France

"Make sure the connection between the change initiative and the organization's strategic direction is clear."
Eric Eggerston – Regina, Canada

"Segment your internal publics as carefully as you would your external publics and make sure communications are timely and appropriate."
Laura Fragiacomo – Sydney, Australia

I hope you enjoy this issue. Sign up now for regular updates on how you can manage change communication in your organization. I wish you all kindest wishes for the festive season.
