PRACTICAL PRE-SUMMIT WORKSHOPS
Monday 11th October, 2010
Melcrum workshops are hands-on, interactive sessions, which allow you to delve deeply into a specific area of communication. You will return to the office with real solutions that you can implement immediately. Places at workshops are strictly limited to ensure you receive one-on-one attention from the workshop leader and have plenty of time to have your specific questions answered.
Morning Workshop A: 9.00 - 12.00
Communicating through change
Change has become the norm for most organisations but the nature of change differs hugely. Public sector organisations face enormous challenges in reducing costs in response to public spending plans. Private sector organisations are variously looking at plans to grow and acquire new businesses, or in some cases hold on to the people they need during a post-recession increase in employee turnover.
This is a workshop that looks at the things that help manage change in uncertain times. It will explore and provide practical approaches and tools used by leading organisations.
Drawing on best practice from a wide range of different organisations and the experiences of participants, the workshop will offer the chance to reflect on the things that can be done to manage change in different settings.
Participants will get the opportunity to look at:
- Leadership
How leaders can develop narratives to provide clear direction, even in large, global and complex businesses. What they do to motivate and inspire their people. How they can build confidence in plans and increase their visibility especially when the future is uncertain.
- Managers and change champions
How companies help managers or change champions create the right climate at work. What these people need to do to take others through change - to energise, challenge and support others.
- Involvement
What can companies do to ensure people feel their voice is being heard? How they lead processes to ensure that everybody feels a participant.
- Audience segmentation
What are the different needs of different audiences and what's the most effective way of targeting efforts to ensure that communication focuses on key marginal audiences where changing perceptions can make the
most difference?
- Measurement
How companies do and should track perceptions through change, and how they can use measurement creatively to examine the impact of people management on business performance.

Morning Workshop B: 13.00 - 16.00
Leading engagement - Equipping leaders to engage staff with strategy
Engaged people deliver higher levels of revenue, productivity and customer service for their organisations. Leaders need to be able to engage their people effectively, but leaders themselves have to be engaged first. This workshop looks at how leaders can engage their people in turning strategy into action. In particular, the workshop will focus on how leaders can increase their ability to engage employees, and how communicators can coach and support their leaders. The workshop will look at critical leadership communication behaviours, and the tools and resources that can be used to encourage and shape them. It will look at the four key areas in which leaders need to raise their game, and provide practical tools for communicators to help them. It will be an interactive session using case studies and participants' experience - an opportunity for generating ideas, developing networks and learning.
This workshop will provide practical tools and techniques, as well as more strategic frameworks to help your leaders improve employee engagement across your organisation.
Find out how to:
- Engage leaders in their roles, and help them understand their impact
- Link engagement to practical business outcomes
- Help employees understand the strategy, and their contribution to it
- Work with leadership to increase engagement
