Communicating During an Economic Downturn:
How to Effectively Manage a Communicator’s Most Challenging Role

Communication during an economic downturn is both complex and intense. The employees want more information, yet the leadership wants to supply even less information worried that it will be interpreted as bad news or demoralizing.  Employees will likely begin to distrust the “corporate mouthpiece.” with their most valued source likely be their line manager, who they will ask for the “real story” and an interpretation of what they hear from other sources.  Communicators who are prepared for these situations can help their organizations manage the changes more successfully – and get back on track faster.

During these periods of uncertainty, communication must be realistic and practical - first addressing employee concerns.  Messaging that is consistently up beat and motivational will be seen as unrealistic, causing frustration and adversely impacting morale.  Direct supervisors are the optimal group for managing morale and responding to rumors during a downturn.  If they understand the business context and regularly connect with their teams, rumor management will be more effective.

During this critical 60-minute webinar, you will learn how to:

  • Shift from broadcast-style communications to timely and powerful personalized communications.
  • Build supervisors’ skills and knowledge base so they can be confident as they relate to employees.
  • Manage the information gaps and rumor mill.
  • Create a restructuring and downsizing communication plan – even when you don’t have any information.
  • Set up rigorous confidentiality guidelines - things that wouldn’t even occur to you.

Plus, the five key questions to ask senior management when you’re called into that first critical meeting about changes around restructuring and downsizing.
