Managers play a vital role when it comes to communicating important messages and engaging employees in delivering the business strategy. Time and again, global research makes it clear that the employee’s first port of call for receiving critical information is their manager.

We as communication professionals already know that communicating is not just about “telling” employees what needs to be done. It’s about explaining the context for business decisions, allowing feedback and conversation and encouraging desired behaviours through clear messages and actions. A key responsibility for communicators right now is to equip managers with the tools, skills and insight they need to become more effective at influencing behaviour in this way.

Kevin

In 1998 Grace decided it was time to pack her bags and leave the corporate world in favour of adventure, excitement and opportunity (okay, well just opportunity then), after 7 years working in the marketing department at major South African clothing retailor Edcon, working on both the Edgars and Sales House brands.

With formal training in the HR field Grace identified an opportunity to combine her HR background and marketing experience to provide new employee engagement and communications solutions. Grace has worked with many leaders to help hone their ability to engage their people.

Currently Marketing and Sales Director of Actuate, the internal marketing consultancy she founded in 2005, Grace spearheads long-term partnerships with clients to yield innovative and effective internal marketing solutions.

Actuate’s client list has included Absa, Nedbank, Liberty Life, Standard Bank, Wimpy, eBucks, MTN, Standard Bank, SAB, Transnet, Investec and Foschini.

What was initially a fledgling industry has grown into an increasingly valued part of the marketing mix largely through the pioneering work of Grace and Actuate, and will continue to grow as the long-term benefits of effective employee engagement are felt by businesses, employees and ultimately consumers.
