Change at the top: 4 ways to support a new leader

April 13th, 2010 By Kelly Dyer, Editor
kelly.dyer@melcrum.com

Yesterday it was announced that Andy Bond, chief executive of leading supermarket chain Asda, is to resign. The company, which is owned by US giant Wal-Mart, is looking to find a replacement as soon as possible.

This news comes after Bond's counterpart at rival retail organization Morrisons, Marc Bolland, made public his decision to quit and make the move to head up Marks & Spencer.

Considering that Britain may also be on the verge of gaining a new Prime Minister, the next couple of months will see a lot of change and new beginnings.

So, what's the role of the internal communicator in all this and how can you best support a new CEO, as well as help employees deal with the change?

Exactly this question was posted to the Internal Comms Hub expert and US communication consultant, Andy Szpekman.

One top tip from Szpekman is to remember that "sincerity trumps canned replies every time. If people believe you're genuine and plainspoken, you'll be seen as credible and likeable."

Take a look at this article for 4 other valuable pieces of advice.

Until next time,

Kelly Dyer
