The path to perfect persuasion
|
Alan Sugar, Donald Trump, Barack Obama - three men who have built successful careers on their gift of the gab and hard work.
Whether it's attempting to get a discount on an overpriced concert ticket or persuading your partner to do the washing up, we all at some stage try and convince others that our way of thinking is right.
Influence is a core skill any good internal communicator should have, so what if your powers of persuasion leave a lot to be desired?
In her article Modes of Persuasion on the Internal Comms Hub, Melcrum Black Belt trainer Sally Hinder offers some great tips on how to fine-tune your influencing skills: "Most of us try to ensure we get our point across well but, in doing so, we forget to really focus on the other person to understand their point of view and who they really are," she explains.
Here's a brief extract: The habit of first seeking to understand then to be understood ties in with one of Aristotle's three aspects of influencing. The first is Pathos, the art of understanding the other person and showing empathy. The other two aspects of influencing that he referred to are Ethos - all about us and how we come across to others - and Logos connected to the message we're trying to convey.
Check out Hinder's top tips on how to implement all three and master the art of persuasion.
Until next time,
