Retaining your top talent using MacLeod's Four Enablers

May 4th, 2010 By Kelly Dyer, Editor
kelly.dyer@melcrum.com

With the recession lifting for many businesses, engagement is more important now than ever before. As companies begin to recruit again, employees will start to consider their career options, meaning retaining key employees is a hurdle many employers may soon face.

"Salaries attract people but typically they don't motivate. Essentially you're attracted to the job for its salary; once you're there you're motivated to do well through our four enablers," says David MacLeod, in an interview for the Internal Comms Hub.

So what are the four enablers that MacLeod and Nita Clarke cite in The MacLeod Review as being critical to employee engagement? According to the authors, these are:

1. Leadership - Must provide a strong narrative, be clear and open about the vision of the company.

2. Engaging managers - The employees most important relationship at work is with their line manager. Managers must be seen to be engaged and committed to the organization.

3. Voice - Communications must not be seen as one-way but two-way where managers facilitate feedback and opinion from employees.

4. Integrity - Behavior must be consistent with values.

By implementing these four enablers as part of your engagement strategy, you'll hopefully help to hold on to those high-performing employees, who will ensure your organization goes from strength to strength this year.

Read what else MacLeod and Nita Clarke have to say about the reaction to The Macleod Review in a newly published article on the Internal Comms Hub.
